खूब लड़ी मर्दानी वह तो झाँसी वाली रानी थी।
(सुभद्रा कुमारी चौहान)

Rani Lakshmibai, the queen of Jhansi, remains the central figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She is one of the known historical figures in the continuous struggle for Indian independence.

After the death of the Maharaja in 1853, the East India Company refused to recognise his heir and annexed Jhansi. But the young Maharani, Lakshmibai, unwilling to cede control, joined rebellion against the British in 1857. She and her regiment fought the British till their last breath trying to save Jhansi.

The Regiment created by Lakshmibai was the first all-women regiment in the history of Indian Army, deployed to fight against the British. Women were made physical fit, trained in military tactics and marksmanship.

Lakshmibai is an icon of an Indian woman’s indomitable courage and refusal to concede defeat under arduous circumstances. Lakshmibai’s legacy has inspired generations of women in India as well as across nations.
